Miami RedHawks: Men’s, women’s basketball coaches won’t return

John Cooper won’t be back as the men’s basketball coach at Miami University. The university announced Friday it would not renew his contract.  Women’s coach Cleve Wright also won’t return, the university said.

Cooper did not have a winning season in five years at Miami, going 59-100 during that span.

“With the support of Miami’s board of trustees and the president, we are making a commitment to Miami basketball,” Miami Athletic Director David Sayler said. “For years Miami basketball was the preeminent leader of the Mid-American Conference and we plan to take all necessary steps to make that happen once more.”

The Miami men lost to Western Michigan on Monday in the Mid-American Conference tournament to finish 11-21.

Cooper came to Miami from Tennessee State in 2012. This was the final year of his five-year contract at Miami.

Wright just completed his fourth season at Miami. The RedHawks finished 11-21 this season. Miami posted a 35-87 mark in Wright’s four seasons.
