RELATED: Our First Four superlatives
Stick with us this afternoon as we follow the biggest stories to come out of the early games of the Big Dance – the upsets, the buzzer-beaters and whatever other viral moments might emerge:
At the bottom of the 4 o’clock hour, we were searching for something to keep us entertained...
Louisville maintained a double-digit lead on most of the way before beating Jacksonville State and North Carolina had trouble with Texas Southern.
That put the spotlight on No. 11 USC and No. 6 SMU.
They delivered.
With 12 minutes left in the second half, the Mustangs had a nine-point lead, but the Trojans went on a run.

That set up a fast and furious finish.
The teams traded the lead a couple of times in the last minute before the Trojans prevailed.
SMU had a chance to win it in the closing seconds, but a driving shot attempt was off the mark.

We just had a controversial finish in an 8-9 game.
Arkansas topped Seton Hall thanks in no small part to a questionable-at-best flagrant foul call that let the Razorbacks to open up a two-possession lead in the closing seconds.

In a nice show of hustle, CBS brought in the NCAA coordinator of officials to explain if the call was correct or not.
The gist: It was correct by the letter of the law.
(However, we would counter that this happens all the time and isn’t called that way because the player doesn’t fall down.)

Meanwhile, Oregon is having little trouble with Oregon while USC and SMU are in a close game. As are Jacksonville State and Louisville.

That final score was meaningful to a few people with money on the game, by the way.
68% of the money at the William Hill sportsbooks in Nevada had Michigan covering by 2.5. They all lost on the final "meaningless" 3.

The second game of the day featured No. 3 Baylor vs. No. 14 New Mexico State.
To the surprise of perhaps few, the Bears had a hard time in the first half, trailing the Aggies 40-38 heading into intermission.
Uh, oh. Baylor trailing a double-digit seed in the first round again.
