Prep Insider: Oakwood, Bellbrook pace area swimmers at district

Southwestern Buckeye League rivals Oakwood and Bellbrook were the highest placing area teams in last weekend’s Southwest District boys and girls swimming and diving championships at Miami University in Oxford.

The Oakwood girls were runner-up to Mariemont in the girls D-II meet. The Bellbrook boys were third in boys D-II.

Other area high team placers were Springboro (fourth), Centerville and Beavercreek (tied for sixth) in boys D-I and Oakwood (fourth) and Carroll (sixth) in boys D-II. Among the D-I girls were Centerville (fifth) and Springboro (seventh), and in D-II Alter (fourth) and Carroll (sixth).

The season-ending state meets are Wednesday through Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

• Beaver-Vu Lanes in at Beavercreek will be the site of Thursday’s boys and girls D-II district bowling. The top four boys teams and four individuals and top three girls teams and three individuals advance to next week’s D-II state championships at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

The D-I girls sectional is Wednesday at Poelking Woodman Lanes in Kettering and boys D-I is Thursday also at Poelking.

• Sectional wrestling is Friday and Saturday at multiple locations. D-I is at Centerville, Lebanon and Hamilton, D-II at Graham and Batavia and D-III at Lehman Catholic and Blanchester. The top four individual placers in all divisions advance to the following week’s district tournaments.

The boys basketball sectionals begin on Thursday, although most area teams that haven’t received a bye play Friday and Saturday.

• A robust inductee class has been added to the Wilbur Wright athletic hall of fame. Individuals added were Eldon Pohl (Class of 1948), Jim Beard (’55), Joe Hensler (’65), Doug Fink (’73), Jeff Washington (’76) Leo Janson (’78) Patricia Whitlow (’82) and Jeff Klepacz (’82).

Inducted coaches were Ben Campbell (baseball), Dean Dooley (basketball and track) and Chuck Hardin (football, basketball and athletic director).

Dayton City League championship teams honored were 1941-42 track, 1942-43 basketball, ’43 football, ’45 track and ’55 track. Also, Jerry McElfresh received the distinguished service award.

• Milton-Union has added four new members to its athletic hall of fame: Doug Studebaker (class of 1971, football, wrestling track), Trent Thompson (’79, football, baseball), Erin Storer Cooper (’91, volleyball, basketball), and Jennifer Ginn Thompson (’01, volleyball, basketball and softball).

• Lee Barlow (Kettering) and John Crispino (Springfield) will be among 13 inductees to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Officials hall of fame. A banquet will be held on June 10 at Columbus. Barlow officiated basketball, baseball, football and softball. Crispino concentrated on football.

• Gavin Richards recently became the seventh Tri-Village boys basketball player to surpass 1,000 career points when he tallied 16 points and five assists in a 69-36 blowout of visiting Greeneview. A guard, Richards was a started on the Patriots’ D-IV state title team in 2015.

• The Fairmont field hockey team has received the OHSAA Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award for 2016-17. The Firebirds were led by first-year coach Macie Miller. The award is based on teams and individuals who have “displayed outstanding traits of ethical behavior and integrity in the performance of duties and responsibilities and is a role model for others,” according to the OHSAA.
