Notre Dame was 4-8 in 2016 and didn’t qualify for a bowl game, which allows Zaire to visit colleges almost immediately.
Zaire led Notre Dame to an upset over LSU in the 2014 Music City Bowl, replacing starter Everett Golston, who would transfer to Florida State. He threw for over 300 yards in the 2015 season-opener against Texas, but broke his ankle the next week against Virginia and missed the season.
After losing the starting job to DeShone Kizer, Zaire was sent to the bench, except for one start during the season at wide receiver.
