Dayton coach Archie Miller would not comment on that report Tuesday. When asked on Sept. 6 if Antetokounmpo was eligible, Miller said, “as of right now, yeah.”
Antetokounmpo attended his first two years of high school in Greece and moved to Milwaukee with his family when his brother Giannis signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. He graduated from Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisc., in the spring.
It’s not uncommon for athletes who have attended classes overseas to run into problems with the NCAA Clearinghouse, and even for athletes who attended four years of high school in the United States, it can take time for the clearinghouse to make a decision. Institutions can appeal on behalf of athletes who are ruled ineligible.
Dayton center Steve McElvene, who passed away in May, was ruled a NCAA partial qualifier on Sept. 26, 2014, weeks after starting classes at UD. He practiced with the team as a freshman but didn’t play. VCU’s Samir Doughty was ruled a partial qualifier on Nov. 11 last season and sat out the season.
