Shauna Green ‘super excited’ for start of practice

Dayton women’s team gets things going Sunday

The work never stops for college basketball coaches. NCAA rules now allow teams to practice during the summer, so when practice officially starts Sunday for Shauna Green and the Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team, it won’t be quite the same as it used to be.

“When I was playing, it was Oct. 15,” Green said. “You had Midnight Madness. There was so much anticipation. You were so excited. That’s the only bad thing about having year-round access. There’s still that feeling but not to the magnitude that it used to be. But knowing we have full practice and a ton of time to really get into stuff, I’m super excited. I know our kids are ready. There’s only so much preseason you can take. We’re excited about Sunday.”

Green’s second season as head coach starts with a few pieces of injury news:

• Shakeela Fowler, a 5-foot-6 point guard from Milwaukee, suffered a torn ACL in practice a few weeks ago and miss the season. Fowler joined the Flyers in May. She played last season at Trinity Valley Community College and played her freshman season at Illinois State. She was slated to be Dayton’s backup point guard.

• Sophomore guard Jenna Giacone suffered a foot injury in August and underwent surgery. Green expects her to return in late October and hopes she’ll be ready for the season.
