5 things to watch in sports this weekend: Basketball takeover edition

For the first time since August, there are no meaningful football games on TV this weekend.

We know that can be disconcerting, so we’re here to help.

Here are five things to watch in sports this weekend:

1. It all starts tonight with Dayton playing at VCU

The Rams are five-point favorites, and a share of first place in the Atlantic 10 is on the line on ESPN2 at 9 p.m.

VCU has won three in a row at home, but the Flyers won their last game at the Siegel Center.

2. Wright State plays tonight, too, but you’ll have to stream it.

WSU has won three games in a row and can pull within a game of first place by knocking off the Alec Peters and the Crusaders, who are 6-1 in Horizon League play.

3. There is a top five matchup Saturday night.

No. 2 Kansas plays at No. 4 Kentucky at 6:15 on ESPN.

Sunday has a big college basketball game, too, as Virginia is headed to No. 1 Villanova to take on the defending national champions on Fox at 1 p.m.

4. UFC Fight Night on FOX Saturday.

The main event pits Julianna Pena against Valentina Shevchenko in what is likely to be a fight to determine the No. 1 contender in the women's bantamweight division.

5. Xavier and Cincinnati return to the court Sunday.

The 19th-ranked Bearcats play host to South Florida at 4 p.m. on CBS Sports Network while the 24th-ranked Musketeers play at St. John’s two hours later on FS1.

How much will either team have in the tank after a classic Crosstown Shootout win by UC on Thursday night?
