Tippecanoe has had a great run of boys high school soccer teams. The only problem was not getting past Carroll or Alter in the postseason.

That all changed Monday night when Tipp’s Andrew Debrosse half-volleyed a shot into the back post with 3:31 left to stun Carroll 1-0 in a Division II district semifinal at Xenia.

“This is more of a revenge kind of thing for us,” said Downing, referring to Tipp’s loss to Carroll in this game last year. “It’s a huge statement. It’s hard not to psyche yourself out in that moment. You see that goal, you’ve really got to put those away. It comes down to finishing.”

Tippecanoe (17-1-1) advances to one of three D-II district finals at 7 p.m. Thursday. Tipp will play Cincinnati Wyoming (11-5-3) at Lakota West. Wyoming advanced by eliminating Western Brown 2-0 also on Monday.

It was only the second loss for Carroll (14-2-1). Ironically, both Tipp and Carroll suffered their only regular-season setbacks to Alter.

Tipp and Carroll both clanged the top of the bar and posts several times and the contest appeared headed to overtime until Debrosse struck on a nifty flick pass from Hunter McGraw.

“Just to get out of the sectional in Dayton is so tough,” Tipp coach Scott Downing said. “(Alter and Carroll), that’s always been your going home night, but not (Monday).”

Tipp goal tender Jacob Franke withstood every attack the Patriots mustered.

“We were banging the ball against the pipes all night,” Carroll coach Scott Molfenter said. “That’s the unfortunate side of soccer sometimes, you can have the ball all night but you give them that one chance, it’s going to cost you.”
