WSU’s Weiss wins HL Pitcher of Week award

Wright State freshman Ryan Weiss has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for Friday’s performance against Illinois-Chicago.

A 6-foot-4 right-hander, Weiss limited the Flames to two runs on three hits in six innings, leading the Raiders to a 3-2 victory that drew them into a first-place tie heading into the final game of the regular season.

After allowing a two-run homer in the first, Weiss blanked the Flames on one hit over the final 5.1 innings to improve to 7-1. He leads the HL with a 2.09 earned run average and is third in strikeouts (74), fourth in wins (seven), fifth in opposing batting average (.232) and seventh in innings pitched (81.2). In league play, he is tied for first in strikeouts (53), tied for second in wins (five), third in ERA (2.34), tied for fourth in innings pitched (57.2) and fifth in opposing batting average (.230).

His selection marks the fifth time that a Raider has earned Pitcher of the Week honors this season as Danny Sexton (February 20, March 27) and Zane Collins (March 6, March 20) each received it twice.

Wright State (36-19) heads to UIC this week as the No. 2 seed in the HL tournament. The Raiders will begin play Thursday against the highest remaining seed after Wednesday’s first-round games.
