A tornado watch is issued by the National Weather Service if conditions are right for a tornado to form. People should pay attention to the weather. A tornado warning is given if a tornado has been spotted or is strongly indicated on radar. People should go to a safe shelter immediately.
The weather service has hundreds of spotters around the state who are trained to recognize and report tornadoes.
Some of the frequently mentioned signs of possible tornadoes include:
• A greenish-black color to the sky.
• A strange quiet that occurs within or shortly after a thunderstorm.
• Clouds moving very fast and converging toward one area of the sky.
• Debris dropping from the sky.
