College football recruiting: Local pair take part in latest Ohio State camp

Two of the noteworthy attendees to the latest Ohio State football one-day camp were underclassmen from the Miami Valley.

Stebbins offensive lineman Jake Wheelock (class of 2024) was back in Columbus after visiting during the spring while Bellefontaine quarterback Tavien St. Clair (2025) stopped at Ohio State on an early summer tour of multiple major colleges.

Though he is just a sophomore, St. Clair’s reputation is growing rapidly.

He announced Tuesday night he received an offer from Louisville, his fifth already to go with Tennessee, Iowa State, Pitt and Central Michigan.

St. Clair saw the Steel City last weekend and Knoxville the weekend before.

The 6-3, 175-pounder threw for 1,722 yards and 13 touchdowns last season as the Chieftains went 7-5.

The 6-4, 275-pound Wheelock is not ranked by recruiting services yet, but he has an offer from Akron and more could be on the way.

Here are some other recruiting notes from the past week:

  • Wayne receiver R.J. Mukes (’23) visited Penn State last weekend and told NittanySportsNow.com he plans to visit Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Louisville, Ohio State and Toledo this summer. He said Penn State has his attention because of its history of utilizing smaller receivers (he is listed 5-11, 170) in the recent past, including K.J. Hamler and Jahan Dotson. “I can take the top off the defense,” he told the site. “I can go anywhere as a receiver, inside, outside. Man coverage, my speed and quickness combined with my ability to separate on my route running and stuff like that also. Then I can add in the special teams aspect, too. Punt return, kick return. Just an overall playmaker.” Mukes is a three-star prospect who so far has offers from Maryland, Toledo, Navy and Army among others.
  • Springfield cornerback Aaron Scott Jr. (’24) added another Power 5 offer, this one from Michigan State, on Tuesday after Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati offered last week.
  • Springfield senior quarterback Bryce Schondelmyer, who transferred from Arcanum, worked out at the Bowling Green camp last weekend and plans to visit Fordham and Yale according to his father.
  • Lakota West receiver Ben Minich (’23) attended Cincinnati’s camp last week and came away with a scholarship offer, his 20th. Scott, Stebbins receiver Adrian Norton (’23) and Trotwood-Madison defensive back Mike Smith (’24) also reported camping at Cincinnati last week.
  • Centerville defensive back Reggie Powers (’24) reported a new offer from Kent State. He plans to visit Tennessee and Ohio State next week with West Virginia to follow. He already had offers from Cincinnati, Ball State and Connecticut, among others.
  • Greenon kicker Matthew Gossett (’23) visited Liberty and Penn State over the weekend. Teammate Kaden Wooten, a 6-1 quarterback, reported receiving his first offer — from D3 Wilmington College.
