RNC Day 1 - Ted Strickland on John Kasich: "I think he has shown integrity"

By Anthony Shoemaker

Staff Writer

Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland paid compliment to current Ohio Gov. John Kasich, the man who ousted him from office in 2010.

“I have said I think he has shown integrity. I’m sure he is under great pressure. My understanding is that the Trump campaign is just within the last few hours criticized him severely for his position and so I do admire the fact that he has been unwilling to cave into pressure and I do think it is because he understands that Donald Trump is unfit to be the president of this country,” Strickland said of Kasich. “He is putting his country over his party. Of course, I would thank him for that.”

Strickland said Trump is unfit and unprepared to be Commander in Chief and seems unable to articulate what he would do as president.

Strickland didn’t have kind words for U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, the Republican incumbent he is challenging for the U.S. Senate. Portman has tepidly endorsed Trump.

“I think he is afraid of alienating Donald Trump’s right flank and the supporters from the right. I hope he is embarrassed by the positions that Donald Trump has taken on a lot of issues. So I think he finds himself between a rock and a hard place but he does not have the courage to call Donald Trump out.”

He noted that Portman and Trump both oppose abortion and raising the minimum wage.

Strickland deflected criticism that he has been running a low-profile campaign. Republicans noted that Strickland made no public appearances over the 4th of July holiday while the Portman campaign maintained a busy schedule, hitting multiple community parades. Strickland said he is plenty visible but on July 4 he opted to visit with his soon-to-turn 90-year-old sister and other family members.
