The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) has won a $9.8 million defense contract for materials research.

The five-year Air Force contract will have UDRI researchers evaluate materials and structures in non-destructive experiments for the Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, which is based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The work will be performed primarily at the base.

Researchers will use ultrasound and X-ray, among other techniques, to measure and describe materials, with a focus on advanced aerospace materials and systems, the university and the Department of Defense said in separate announcements Thursday.

Work is expected to be completed by Aug. 3, 2026.

The university performed $149.8 million in sponsored research in fiscal year 2018.

By far most of that, 91.5 percent, was work with federal sources, such as NASA, the departments of Defense and Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.
