Local projects receive $1.6 million from state

The State Controlling Board has approved the release of a total $1.6 million to complete road work in Clayton and aid UltaCell Corp. in its manufacture and marketing of its XX55 fuel cell.

Clayton is receiving $600,000 to complete road work on a 4,200-foot stretch of Hoke Road after Caterpillar Logistics Services Inc. confirmed its plans in early December to build a new distribution center in the area. The center will employ 500 to 600 people and is expected to be “fully operational” by 2011, according to a company news release.

Hoak Road, currently a narrow two-lane road, will be upgraded and widened to accommodate truck traffic coming in and out of the new complex.

Receiving its $1 million through the Third Frontier Research and Development Fund grant, Vandalia’s Ultra Cell Corp. is working with the University of Dayton and Mound Technical Solutions on the XX55 fuel cell, which is powered by biodegradeable methanol. The fuel cell can deliver 50 watts of continuous power for weeks.
