National chain opens first local outdoor, RV supercenter

A new RV retail and outdoors superstore is now open in Huber Heights.

Gander RV Sales opened Wednesday at 8001 Old Troy Pike. The store has recreational vehicles for sale, as well as RV and camping gear, RV maintenance and repair, other outdoor and sports products.

The location was formerly home to Gander Mountain, an outdoor retail chain. Camping World bought Gander Mountain after it filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and the store in Huber Heights had closed shortly after Gander had sold.

However, Camping World has been opening a series of stores co-branded with the Gander name, including a location in Huber Heights where the old store had closed.

The Dayton Daily News reported in April that Camping World agreed to purchase up to 17 acres of city owned land adjacent to the former Gander Mountain building in preparation for the new store.

Camping World in June announced plans to open Gander RV stores around the U.S. Camping World said it expects to grow the company’s RV sales locations by more than 30 percent by the end of 2019 between new stores and acquisitions.

“Our planned expansion with Gander RV Sales locations and our continuing strategy to aggressively pursue opportunistic acquisitions and new store development, reinforces our focus on increasing market share with our country wide expansion,” Roger Nuttall, president of the Camping World RV group, had said.
