Trotwood to get new pharmacy

The owner of two area pharmacies is planning to open a third in Trotwood, allowing the city to have its only independent pharmacy.

Kindy Ghussin, owner of the Heartland Pharmacies located at 3000 Far Hills Ave. in Kettering and 2749 Alex Bell Road in Moraine, is bringing the KMG Pharmacy to 846 E. Main Street in November. This is the former site of Hattie J’s restaurant.

Trotwood’s Interim City Manager Quincy Pope said KMG’s arrival will help grow the local economy and will bring in more income tax revenue.

“KMG Pharmacy is an independent retail pharmacy that is entering the Trotwood market place and we are extremely excited about having them as a new business and community partner,” Pope said. “KMG Pharmacy will be an outstanding opportunity for our citizens, because it just provides the community with another option or choice when purchasing prescriptions.”

Pope added he believes that in general, independent pharmacy owners have high standards of customer service.

Bruce Kettelle, president of the Trotwood Chamber of Commerce and city councilman, said he believes the presence of the new pharmacy will add traffic to East Main Street, which he said will benefit nearby businesses.

“There seems to be a new role in communities for dedicated small pharmacies where you don’t have to walk through a big convenience store just to get to the prescription counter,” Kettelle said.”I suspect some of this expansion is also being driven by the new expanded medicaid insurance rules.”

Ghussin said he was attracted to Trotwood because the city did not have an independent pharmacy.

“I always liked to have every community to have at least one independent pharmacy so that people can experience the independent service,” Ghussin said.

The KMG Pharmacy store will feature prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, medical equipment, incontinence items, and have a small $1 items section.

“It’s going to be mainly a healthcare store,” Ghussin said. The store will offer free prescription delivery service five days a week, he added.

Ghussin, who worked for a chain pharmacy before starting his own company, has been in the pharmacy business for 14 years. “I’ve been an independent pharmacist for about 10 years now,” he said.

The former New York resident graduated from SUNY Buffalo in 2002 with a doctorate in pharmacy, a bachelor’s degree in biology and a bachelor’s degree in biological pharmacology and a minor in philosophy and sociology.
