12th Dayton Concours d’Elegance showcases automotive heritage, future

More than 200 cars and motorcycles, perfect blue skies and a comfortable temperature were the key elements to attracting thousands of visitors to Carillon Historical Park for the 12th edition of the Dayton Concours d’Elegance Sept. 16.

Gale Halderman, former Ford design director and creator of the 1965 Mustang, served as this year’s Concours grand marshall. Halderman brought his personal Mustang convertible and parked it next to his own tent, with a display of first-generation Mustangs nearby. Show-goers visited him and asked questions.

The Concours highlighted the 65-acre park and museum at 1000 Carillon Blvd. in Dayton, which contains historic buildings and exhibits concerning the history of technology and the history of Dayton and its residents from 1796 to the present. All exhibits were open for family-friendly education and fun, with plenty of interpreters present.

Presented by AAA Miami Valley, the Concours showcased 200 antique and classic automobiles, motorcycles and scooters. Vehicles were judged for awards in 28 classes. Featured marques were Cadillac and the E-type Jaguar as well as a special class, “Eight Isn’t Enough”, highlighting cars with more than 8-cylinder engines.

Vehicles arrived from multiple states, including Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky.

The Fishers Body Craftsmen’s Guild held its reunion with members attending from across the United States; a display of hand-built models competed for the Larry Miller Best of Show Award.

All proceeds from the weekend go to Dayton History, Montgomery County’s official historical organization, to underwrite educational programs for thousands of schoolchildren, and maintain facilities.

See next week’s Wheels for a final set of Concours photos.
