Why are you seeking elected office? I am running for the Newton school board to be able to give back to the community and schools. I benefitted from attending Newton schools, and I want to be a voice for the parents, students and staff. In the next four years, many tough topics will be coming up for school boards across the state. I want to be a voice of reason and support all Newton families, staff and taxpayers.
Why should voters elect you? I have a Bachelor’s degree and an Ohio license as a social worker. I have 16 years of child development experience. I have worked for Help Me Grow; Community Mental Health as a hotline worker and mobile crisis therapist; worked in public education as a social, behavioral, academic support consultant; and in mental health private practice. My career focus is on child/adolescent development and trauma. I have experience working with families to navigate the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) process and utilize community resources. The four years I worked in education, my primary role was supporting staff and students with SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Systems) state mandates.
If elected, what will be your top three priorities? Students are falling behind from school closures, quarantines and mask mandates. This will be a long-lasting problem that will need direct support in making sure every student succeeds. School staff also need extra support as they are working overtime to provide an appropriate educational program and learning environment, which will effectively meet the educational needs of their students. Open communication and transparency with students, families, staff and taxpayers is needed.
What specific plans do you have to address those top priorities? I want to bring in programs that support students and staff and expand on state mandates that can be better implemented in the district. One way of doing this is providing staff with trainings for the state mandated SEL and PBIS. Staff need training and support to be able to fulfill these standards. There are a wealth of trainings and curriculums available that would support them and in the long term support the students. I want open dialogue and transparency with the district for students, parents and taxpayers. I want special education students and students that are struggle to know they have support.
Anything else you would like voters to know? I am a 2001 Newton graduate and have lived in Pleasant Hill for 27 years. Thank you for your support!
