Police: 27-year-old man shot, killed in Dayton

One of two men shot Saturday evening near an elementary school and library branch succumbed to his injuries.

A 27-year-old man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead Saturday at Miami Valley Hospital, said Lt. Steven Bauer of the Dayton Police Department.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 7:10 p.m. to the 2300 block of Elsmere Avenue, off West Hillcrest Avenue, on a report of a shooting. The shooting was reported near Fairview Park on the grounds of Dayton Public Schools at Fairview Commons, which houses pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.

Officers found a 37-year-old man, who was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police learned that a second gunshot victim, the 27-year-old man, was taken by private vehicle to the hospital before they arrived, Bauer said.

A 911 call log indicated that at least six gunshots were heard, according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center.

The shooting is under investigation by the department’s homicide unit.
