2018 EMMY AWARDS: No Emmy for local superstars John Legend and Allison Janney

Locals John Legend and Allison Janney both received nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards Monday night.

Legend was up for his first Emmy for the live staging of "Jesus Christ Superstar, Live in Concert" as the Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. The award he was nominated for went to Darren Criss for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Janney was up for another Emmy, Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The award she was nominated for went to Rachel Brosnahan for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

FIRST REPORT:

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards are tonight, and once again, Dayton and the Miami Valley are well-represented.

Legend is up for his first Emmy for the live staging of “Jesus Christ Superstar, Live in Concert.” Legend is already in an elite group of artists who have received the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony awards). He was awarded a Creative Arts Emmy earlier this month for his role as executive producer for “Jesus Christ Superstar.” He is the first African-American male to achieve the honor and is tied as the youngest winner.

Tonight, he is up for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

Janney is up for another Emmy lead actress for the comedy series “Mom,” which airs on CBS.

This is Janney’s 5th nomination for “Mom,” winning an Emmy in both 2014 and 2015 for Supporting Actress. She was nominated last year for Lead Actress for “Mom” but lost to Julia Louis-Dreyfus for her role in “Veep.”

Leading the ranks are “Game of Thrones” with 22 nominations, followed by “Saturday Night Live” and “Westworld,” each with 21 nominations and “The Handmaids Tale” with 20 nods.

More first-time nominees include Tiffany Haddish for her hosting stint on “SNL,” Issa Rae for “Insecure,” and Ricky Martin for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”

Among the networks, Netflix leads with 112 total nominations, followed by HBO with 108.
