Musical offerings reveal diversity

Options abound for classical, jazz, folk fans.

An abundance of orchestral, vocal and chamber performances are on tap for 2014-15.

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra opens its season with a Russian sensibility showcasing the works of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff and Borodin in collaboration with the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Opera. The DPO’s Classical Series also promises tributes to Berlioz, Mahler, Mozart and more. On Halloween, the organization strays from the norm to provide a special rock concert of “The Rocky Horror Show” bound to have audiences dancing in the aisles.

The always diverse SuperPops Series notably features the return of acclaimed jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli (highlighting the music of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole) in addition to the Texas Tenors, Tiempo Libre, “Peter Pan” (a collaboration with Dayton Ballet featuring music by Carmon DeLeone and choreography by Septime Webre), and a screening of the classic musical “Singin’ in the Rain” backed by the orchestra. The routinely entertaining Rockin’ Orchestra lineup spotlights Chicago, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, the Beatles, and Indigo Girls.

Dayton Opera, aiming for entertaining and thought-provoking fare, offers Mozart’s sprightly “The Magic Flute” (directed by Kathleen Clawson and featuring Hye Jung Lee in her Dayton Opera debut as Queen of the Night), Jake Heggie’s compelling “Dead Man Walking” (directed by Gary Briggle), and Georges Bizet’s exotic “The Pearl Fishers” (directed by Fenlon Lamb and featuring the full Dayton Ballet with choreography by Karen Russo Burke). In particular, the DPO brings “Dead Man Walking” to the Midwest for the first time in over a decade.

Classical fans can also expect quality orchestral and vocal presentations from such troupes as Bach Society of Dayton, Chamber Music Yellow Springs, Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra, Musica!, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and Wright State University.

The Dayton Art Institute’s Jazz and Beyond Series launches with the John Slate Trio and continues with the Bob Gray Orchestra and Puzzle of Light. You can also find great music at Gilly’s featuring such acts as Chris Duarte, Noah Wotherspoon, and Motown tribute band Touch. Variety elsewhere can be found courtesy of the Miami Valley Community Concert Association and the University of Dayton among others.
