Who deserves the title World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band has been a common topic of debate for eons. Just because those parlaying are usually sipping from red solo cups at the time doesn’t make it any less worth discussion. The Beatles? Led Zeppelin? The Rolling Stones?
No matter your cup of tea, or other substance, there’s something to be said for a band that still tours, with members who’ve long since earned their senior discount cards. Mick Jagger, who will turn 70 next month, Keith Richards, 70 in December, Ron Woods, still a baby at 66, and elder statesman Charlie Watts, a ripe 72, are currently crossing the U.S., on their “50 & Counting” Tour. No, the “50” doesn’t represent the age they wish they were. It’s a celebration of how many years they’ve been together.
While it might seem a little disturbing to see a man your Grandpa’s age chicken strutting around a stage screaming he can’t get “no satisfaction,” the show is selling out nationwide.
As if Mick, Keith and company need help to up their coolness quotient, they’re asking other singers to join them onstage to croon some tunes. And not just rock stars — country stars!
Keith Urban kicked off the band’s tour in early May, playing his trusty Telecaster as he jammed with the other Keith on “Respectable.” “If I had been offered either a trip to the moon or sitting in with The Stones, I would still have been strapping on my Tele saying, ‘Screw the moon,’ ” he said on his website.
Later that month, Carrie Underwood matched Mick strut for strut in Toronto on a white-hot duet of “It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll (But I Like It).” Afterward, she posted on her Twitter page, “I just sang with the @RollingStones! Holy cow! I walked off stage and said, “What just happened?!” Still can’t believe it! :)”
Sheryl Crow, rocker turned country gal, took a turn in Chicago May 31, and the next night Taylor Swift joined the guys for a stripped down “As Tears Go By.” She tweeted, “Filing this under ‘never in my wildest dreams’.Thank you @RollingStones for inviting me to Chicago to sing with you.”
When The Stones hit Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Arena June 18, Brad Paisley not only traded vocals with Mick on “Dead Flowers,” he also “tore it up” on a guitar solo at Mick’s request. In an interview, Brad says, “they are a great country band!”
Might be a good idea to get you some Stones’ tickets, just to see who else would show up. How about Miranda Lambert on “Honky Tonk Woman?” Or hubby Blake Shelton on “Satisfaction?” On second thought, better check with Miranda first, huh?
