Just like a fairy godmother waving her wand, at the stroke of midnight, a new Taylor Swift video arrived.
The new single from the pop superstar, “ME!,” is a giddy duet with Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco, a worthy partner vocally and stylistically.
As usual with Swift, the immediate theme is metamorphosis, showcased at the beginning of the major-production video with a creepy snake (her “Reputation” motif) self-combusting into a batch of butterflies.
Does this mean the old Taylor is back?
Nah, and she shouldn’t be, because even though “ME!” doesn’t stray from her sweetest spot - it’s a classic earworm with an unshakable chorus -- Swift continues to explore and expand.
The video is a beauty, kicking off with a goofy fight (in French!) between Swift and Urie (and in front of the children -- her adorable cats -- no less!) before Swift snaps into Taylor Performance mode. She twirls with a cadre of dancers clad in Skittles colors, Urie floats down -- Mary Poppins-like -- with an umbrella, and more cute cats make cameos.
Get ready to hear the breezy song a few billion times this summer.
