10 food events that will make you drool

With summer winding down, August is a busy month packed with events to help us soak up the sun and enjoy merrymaking with friends.

Here are 10 August food and entertainment events that are on my radar that you might want to consider this month as you endeavor to make the most of summer 2016.

DRIED PIGS AND FARMER FIZZ AT CRAFTED & CURED

Aug. 9, 7 p.m.

531 Wayne Ave, Dayton

Advanced Sommelier Michael Freeman of Vintner Select will be doing a guided tasting of grower champagne to be paired with the new selection of cured meats at Crafted & Cured — one of my favorite new spots to grab a drink in town. Tickets are $50 plus tax and will include a flight of four Champagnes: Jean Vesselle Oeil de Pedrix Brut, Pierre Peters ‘Cuvee de Reserve’ Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru, Egly-Ouriet ‘Les Vignes de Vrigny’ Premier Cru and Henri Billiot Rosé Brut Grand Cru. The charcuterie board includes smoked salmon topped with a micro green salad and agrumato lemon olive oil, iberico cordobesa, toma and lardo crostini.

DAYTON VISUAL ARTS CENTER’S CSA HARVEST PARTY!

Aug. 9, 6-8 p.m.

Held at Dayton Beer Company, 41 Madison St., Dayton

The 2016 DVAC Community Supported Art Program — CSA(rt) — is a spin on “Community Supported Agriculture” providing art lovers a share of fresh, handcrafted artwork. Everyone’s invited to celebrate DVAC’s new “crop” of art at a party that’s open to the community. Head to Dayton Beer Company to meet the 2016 CSA artists, enjoy delicious Mexican snacks from Taqueria Mixteca as well as Dayton Beer Company beers and wine by the bottle at a cash bar. As a DVAC CSA coordinator and CSA shareholder along with my partner in crime, artist Amy Deal, this is sure to be a fun celebration of fresh art and cool people. Cost is $10 per person or free for CSA Shareholders (the ticket price can be applied to purchase of CSA that night if you decide to buy in). Live classic country and traditional Hawaiian music by DeBray will be there to add some ambiance to the evening.

TASTE OF THE GREENE

Aug. 11, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

4452 Buckeye Lane, Beavercreek

Greene Town Center in Beavercreek will be offering up tasty samples of food from with all proceeds benefiting Big Brother Big Sisters of The Miami Valley. Cost is $15 in advance and $20 day of event. Participating restaurants for the Thursday evening event include: BD’s Mongolian Grill, Brio Tuscan Grille, Coldstone Creamery, Fleming’s Steakhouse, Great Steak, Kilwin’s, McCormick & Schmick’s, Omaha Steaks, Pasha Grill, Oilerie and The Pub.

GERMANFEST PICNIC

Aug. 12-14: Friday 5-11 p.m.; Saturday noon to 11 p.m.; Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

Carillon Historical Park, 1000 Carillon Blvd, Dayton

Germanfest celebrates it’s 33rd year at Carillon Historical Park with all the favorite authentic foods — Schnitzel dinners, Brats, Metts and German Potato Salad that can be enjoyed with live German music from Alpen Echos, Spass!, Chardon Polka Band and Organ Grinder Ted Guillaum. The opening ceremonies and keg tapping starts at 6 p.m. Aug. 12 and the fun goes throughout the weekend.

SPRINGFIELD ROTARY GOURMET FOOD TRUCK COMPETITION

Aug. 13, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Veterans Park Amphitheater, 250 Cliff Park Road, Springfield

A pretty full spectrum of food truck menus and styles will be on display in Springfield for the Springfield Rotary Club’s Second Annual Gourmet Food Truck Competition.

“Last year’s competition went incredibly well, so we’re aiming to continue that success and host an event that’s fun and tasty for everyone involved,” said Edward Bell, Rotary member and Food Truck Competition marketing committee chair.

All proceeds from the event, sponsored by Speedway, will benefit the Springfield Rotary Club’s charitable causes, including Services to People with Disabilities, Polio Plus and the International Project in Lesotho, Africa.

YUENGLING BANDS AND BBQ

Aug. 14, 1-9 p.m.

Austin Landing Park, 10050 Innovation Drive, Miamisburg

Hickory River Smokehouse, 1776 Grill, Basil’s Draught Station, El Meson and Zink’s Fine Meat’s and Wines will all be participating in the fourth annual Yuengling Bands and BBQ being held at Austin Landing Park from 1-9 p.m. Live country music including headliner Jana Kramer and barbecue are the theme of the day. Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 day of event.

FAIRBORN SWEET CORN FESTIVAL

Aug. 20-21: Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

691 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, Fairborn

Featuring approximately 180 booths, this popular festival is a nice way to spend the afternoon. During the summer I can’t get enough sweet corn and this event is always the test of how devoted I am.

BACON FEST 2016

Aug. 21, 3 p.m.

695 Lincoln Park Boulevard, Kettering

Get ready for a celebration of all things bacon as 16 local restaurants “baconate” popular dishes and work to prove the events motto: “Everything is better with bacon.” Gates open at 3 p.m. with Flashback Band followed by The Fries at 5 p.m. and Michael Christopher Band at 7 p.m.

DARKE COUNTY FAIR

Aug. 21-29

800 Sweitzer Street, Greenville

More than 250,000 people are expected to visit Greenville this year for the Great Darke County Fair. It will have all the entertainment, food, rides, animals and tractors that you would expect, but it also will have plenty of delicious food onhand. This is definitely fair food worth marking your calendar for.

ALEFEST DAYTON

Aug. 27, 3-6 p.m.

Dave Hall Plaza, Downtown Dayton

The 17th annual AleFest will feature more than 400 craft beers from more than 75 breweries from around the country with a cask alley and a wine garden to help quench guests thirst. Local food trucks including El Meson, Jimmie’s Streatery and Zombie Dogz will be on hand selling food to help guests alleviate any hunger pains.
