LAST CHANCE: Eat your way through brunch at these food trucks

September is the last month to enjoy one of my favorite breakfast-inspired food events — Brunch! A Food Truck Rally.

These have been happening all summer long on the first Sunday of the month from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Hosted by Smokin’ Bee-Bee-Q and The Drunken Waffle food trucks, the rallies focus on bringing together some of the area’s best food trucks, all serving brunch. There’s not much you can’t find — biscuits and gravy, waffles, french toast, eggs almost every way you can think of, and all of the breakfast meats are present as well as many other brunchy options. And to sweeten the deal, the Yellow Cab Tavern offers brunch cocktails like Bloody Mary’s and mimosas.

The food truck events aren’t just limited to the breakfast variety.

Yellow Cab Food Truck Rallies take place on the third Friday of the month through October from 5-10 p.m. A typical rally offers guests plenty of trucks — and the unique menus they feature — to choose from. Free live music provides the soundtrack and local craft beer on draft provides the social lubrication. Depending on the event other vendors themed to the event are present.

“We like to describe the Yellow Cab Food Truck Rallies as a ‘Gourmet Street Food Festival’ that happens twice a month. We say this because while food trucks are at the cornerstone of what is being offered there is so much more going on. There will typically be anywhere between eight and 12 food trucks, 15 handmade vendors, free live music from a local band, and 10 taps of local craft brews. It is a great gathering place for friends and family and typically we’ll see upwards of 2,000 to 3,000 attendees per event,” said Brian Johnson, an organizer and promoter who helps with Yellow Cab Food Truck Rallies.

The beauty of the food truck rallies at Yellow Cab is there’s something for everyone. The offerings are diverse and flavorful and it’s a terrific way to sample the wares of many different food trucks at once for a better idea of the cooking that’s happening in these rolling restaurants on wheels. The only drawback to them is that depending on the time of day the crowds can be substantial, so be prepared for some lines.

“From a food and dining perspective, The Yellow Cab Food Truck Rallies are the perfect event for foodies who love diverse offerings. You can try everything from some of Dayton’s best barbecue to ramen to gourmet waffle sandwiches and everything you can imaging in between. We work really hard to try to have offerings from every genre possible: Modern American, Asian, South American, Greek, Indian, and more,” said Johnson. “We also love to throw themed food truck events that focus on the best of specific genres, like the Brunch Rallies, The Dayton Barbecue Rodeo, and The Taco Truck Takeover.”

Johnson and other organizers say the beauty of the food truck events is the diversity.

Diversity of food, diversity of the community present and the diversity of the experiences themselves.

And when it comes to the diversity of breakfast options, Sept. 3 will be a date at Yellow Cab not to miss.
