What hair styles are most popular this season?

Perry:

The rooted, shadowed blonde look. These colors have been really popular in our shop. It’s really low maintenance, and women have really been gravitating toward that more than the ombr

é

or the full highlights. It’s so much lower maintenance and so trendy right now.

If we’re looking to do something drastic but professional, what do you suggest?

Perry:

Color. It’s an awesome way to do something drastic, especially for people who aren't quite ready to commit to something extreme. You don’t have to go crazy with it but it’s nice to be able to play with a little bit of color from time to time.

What’s your advice for people nervous about making a change?

Perry:

Speak to your stylist about options — someone at a salon that keeps up with the trends. Also make sure you have a stylist that encourages them to keep evolving forward. You don’t want to get stuck in that same style.

What have most people who come to your shop done to change their look?
Mitchell:

Right now our most our most popular look has been the longer bob that has a little a bit of texture to it with curls or with a flat iron—a little messy—nothing super polished, and not really beachy either since we are not into spring yet.

What’s your advice for people who want to take risks this season?

Mitchell:

I would suggest you take some risks by switching up your color. This is really easy to do with highlights. It can be subtle, but adding a little color is a simple thing you can do in order to make yourself feel fresh and new.

How can people do a change that's quick, easy and inexpensive?
Mitchell: Something I always suggest for people to do is to change their part. It's a simple and inexpensive way to make a change.

Master Stylist J Hawes, Salon on Rahn
30 W. Rahn Road, Dayton
Hours: 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday

What have you seen people gravitating toward in the New Year?

Hawes:

We are seeing a lot of the angled bobs right now. People want that option of looking like they still have long hair in the front, but in the back they aren’t really wanting to be bothered. So if you want to have the look that you have long hair, you can try the extreme bob. This is when your hair is long in the front—around your collarbone, but in the back, it’s cut up high and there’s a nice angled look. You hair will still look like you have long, shoulder length hair with all of the fullness, and none of the fuss in the back.

What are some suggestions you have for people looking to change their look?

Hawes:

I’d suggest ombr

é

or balayage -- (they) are really popular right now. Balayage is a way to control the highlighting process and you just paint in the highlight—pick and choose where the highlights are going to be and how heavy or light you are going to go. Ombre is the gradual fade from dark to light or vice versa. You can always add a bit more flicker or pop to your hair color. You can also decide if you are going to keep your natural hair color or change your color altogether.

What's your advice for people who are not sure if they want to do something different?

Hawes:

I would play around a lot with extensions. Clip-ins are the most popular right now. Say for instance you thought you might want to have a bolder highlight look in your hair, but you’re a natural Brunette, we can take clip-ins and clip the colors in and raise them in places in your hair to add a bold pop of color. We can even go as far as to add pink, red, blue, yellow, orange—all of the colors in the rainbow. The rainbow-lit hair is very popular right now with younger people. To keep from having to go through the maintenance of having that done every four weeks, you can just take that clip-in and clip it into your hair and add that bold pop of color wherever you decide.
