Kettering 5K race honors Fairmont grad who lost cancer fight

The annual Fort 5K Run, honoring the life of Melissa Fortener-McLaughlin, will be held Saturday, May 11 in Kettering.

Fortener-McLaughlin, a Farimont High School graduate, died at age 30 in 2009 after a five-year battle with breast cancer. She was involved in student council and multiple sports at Fairmont, and a scholarship is given each year in her name.

The race begins at 8 a.m. with check-in starting at 7 a.m. at Trent Arena, behind Fairmont High School at 3301 Shroyer Road in Kettering. Runners, walkers, children and dogs are welcome.

The race registration fee is $35 with all proceeds benefiting the Fairmont girls basketball program. Online registration is available at https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Kettering/TheFORT5k.
