It wasn’t just the on-stage performers who showed up in knee-high stiletto boots at last Sunday’s “Kinky Boots” matinee.

Members of The Rubi Girls — Dayton’s popular comedic drag troupe arrived at the Schuster Center’s Wintergarden in their own kinky boots as well. The guys —dressed in street attire except for their shoes — drew lots of laughs and attention with many theater patrons asking to be photographed in their midst.

It all added to the fun of a terrific show with an important message.

“The message of ‘Kinky Boots’ is that you change the world when you change your mind,” actor Timothy Ware told me in a phone interview a few weeks before the show came to Dayton with Ware in the leading role of Lola. “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” he said. “Learn to accept others for what they are.”
