3 ways Dayton will be represented at the Golden Globe Awards

The Dayton region will be well represented during the 76th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019.

‘A Star is Born’

“A Star is Born,” the blockbuster film directed by and starring Bradley Cooper, is up for five awards. The movie features Cooper’s real-life pal and Yellow Springs resident Dave Chappelle.

Cooper, and his film, were nominated for Best Motion Picture -Drama, Best Director, and Best Performance by an Actor-Drama.

Lady Gaga, who also stars in the film, was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama. “Shallow” a song performed by Lady Gaga and Cooper, was nominated for Best Original Song-Motion Picture.

In the film Chappelle plays a character called Noodles, an old friend of Cooper’s character. Chappelle’s daughter Sanaa, also has a role in the film.

In October, Cooper and Chappelle hosted a private screening for “A Star is Born,” at the Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs, giving the crowd an inside look at the movie-making process.

“I can’t wait for everyone to see this movie, man,” Chappelle told the audience. “This movie is real powerful. People don’t know what it’s like to be in entertainment or step on a big stage. This movie really does capture the content of it. It’s gut wrenching up there.”

Cooper told the audience in Yellow Springs the film took about four years to create. He said he wrote the character Noodles with Chappelle in mind.

‘The Old Man & The Gun’

Robert Redford was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, for his role in “The Old Man & The Gun.”

Parts of the movie were filmed in Dayton, downtown Hamilton and Cincinnati in 2017.

The film is based on the 2003 New Yorker article “The Old Man and the Gun” by Dan Grann about bank robber and escape artist Forrest “Woody” Tucker. Redford plays Tucker in the film directed and written by David Lowery.

‘Dirty John’

A movie about a former Dayton-area con man, “Dirty John,” earned Connie Britton a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

John Meehan, the subject of the Bravo TV series, got his nickname during his short time at University of Dayton’s law school in 1988.

The 76th Golden Globe Awards show will air Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
