More than 30 cited during OVI checkpoints in Dayton

More than 30 people received citations during two OVI checkpoints in Dayton Friday.

The checkpoints took place near East Third and Terry streets and South Keowee and East Fifth streets and were operated by the Dayton Police Department and the Montgomery County Combined Agency OVI Task Force.

Three hundred and fifty people went through the checkpoints with 46 diverted, according to Dayton police.

There were 27 people cited for suspended or no valid operating license and three people cited for seat belt violations. Two people received “other” citations, but additional information wasn’t released by police.

No OVI arrests were made, but one warrant was served.

The goal of checkpoints is to reduce drug and alcohol-related crashes.

There have been at least 102 OVI-related crashes and 92 alcohol-related crashes in Montgomery County so far this year, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

From Jan. 1, 2018, to March 7, 2022, there were 2,633 OVI-related crashes in Montgomery County, with 533 in the city of Dayton, according to Dayton police.

State law requires that law enforcement announce times and locations of sobriety checkpoints in advance.
