A 70-year-old Camden woman was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday night while walking across a street in West Alexandria.

The woman was identified Tuesday as Mary Cooper by the Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson.

Crews were dispatched around 8:15 p.m. to the first block of North Main Street (state Route 503), where a vehicle had struck a pedestrian.

The preliminary investigation found that Cooper was crossing North Main Street in the middle of the block when she was struck by a vehicle headed north in the northbound lane, according to the statement from Simpson.

The driver, a 17-year-old Lewisburg resident, and a juvenile passenger, were not injured.

Cooper was taken to Kettering Health Preble ER in Eaton, where she died from her injuries, the sheriff said.

The crash remains under investigation.
