One of the apartments may have been vacant, according to fire officials.
No injuries were reported, said Captain Andy Shepherd. At least four cats were missing.
Smoke alarms played an important role in alerting people to the fire, Shepherd said. Multiple people were asleep when the fire started and were able to evacuate safely after waking up to the smoke alarms.
The fire was reported at 10:24 p.m. in the 300 block of Woodhills Boulevard. When fire crews arrived, both the second and third floors of the complex were fully involved, Shepherd said. Resident were leaving the complex as crews arrived.
The fire started on a second-floor balcony before spreading to the third floor and the roof. Extensive damage was reported, and that portion of the complex is believed to be a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Initial reports that one person was trapped were incorrect, Shepherd said.
