“The main problems will likely be any side streets or roadways that weren’t treated that well through the day (on Sunday),” said News Center 7 Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs. “Also sidewalks, parking lots and anything that has anything leftover will be a bit slippery.”
The National Weather Service expected lingering layers of ice under the snow to impact travel conditions into today. A winter storm watch will be in effect through this afternoon.
The area will remain dry, but cold, Vrydaghs said.
Temperatures are forecast to dip to the low teens by this morning, with the wind chill making it feel as low as zero to minus 5 degrees. The high today will only reach 20 degrees, with a wind chill in the single digits. Temperatures will drop into the single digits tonight with the wind chill making it feel below zero, according to the NWS.
“Not only will breezy conditions contribute to frigid wind chills, but it could also result in blowing snow,” Vrydaghs said.
Temperatures will gradually increase throughout the week from the low 20s on Tuesday to 28 on Wednesday and 34 on Thursday, she said.
Sunday’s wintry mix triggered hazardous driving conditions throughout the region. In Clark County, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 12:50 p.m. to the 4000 block of Dayton Springfield Road around after a teenage driver lost control of her vehicle and crashed head-on into pickup truck with a plow. The teen’s injuries were minor, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
Interstate 71 south, a mile north of the Ohio 72 exit in Greene County, closed around 4:55 a.m. after snow plow and a SUV collided. One person was injured, according to scanner reports.
Two hours later, a vehicle crashed into a police in the 2000 block of U.S. 68 south. No injuries were reported.
Traffic on Ohio 235, north of Interstate 70, was blocked by a two-vehicle crash around 8:30 a.m.; one person was taken to the hospital. About 15 minutes later, a Ohio Department of Transportation plow was involved in a crash on I-70 east of Ohio 4 in Clark County. Injuries were not serious, according to the OHP.
ODOT reported 120 plows were on the road on Sunday and cautioned drivers to use extra care when driving bridges and ramps, which typically freeze first.
In addition to roads, the mix of snow and ice may have been responsible for several flight cancellations and delays reported at Dayton International Airport. Flight departures to Tampa, Baltimore and Detroit were among the cancellations.
Poor weather conditions are to blame for slow business at many establishments. Michael York, the owner of Woody’s Bar-B-Q based in Beavercreek, said, told News Center 7 that he had no customers Sunday morning.
York said this winter has been tough for his business, and he is looking forward to spring.
