U.S. bombers fly night mission with South Korea, Japan jets

U.S. B-1B Lancer bombers flew their first night flights in tandem with South Korean and Japanese fighter jets on both coasts of the Korean Peninsula, CNN reported.

The Oct. 10 mission comes at a time of rising tensions between the United States and North Korea over the North’s nuclear weapons ambitions.

In a Sept. 19 speech at the United Nations, President Donald Trump vowed to “totally destroy” North Korea if the nation attacked the United States or its allies while North Korean officials have lashed out at Trump and threatened war.

In the run-up to the latest face-off, North Korea launched missiles over Japan and continued rocket and nuclear bomb tests while the United States, South Korea and Japan have engaged in military exercises that have angered the North.

The Oct. 10 flights marked the first time B-1 bombers in the Pacific have flown at night with South Korea and Japanese fighter jets, according to a U.S. Pacific Air Force statement.

Two of the swing-wing bombers took off from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam and flew with two South Korean F-15Ks and two Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-15s, the statement said
