Dayton candidate gets OK from board; city will have May election

The city of Dayton will have a May runoff election after David Esrati succeeded in getting his petitions certified.

Esrati will be one of five Dayton City Commission candidates on the May 7 ballot. The top four vote-getters will move on to the November election.

Last week, the Montgomery County Board of Elections decided not to certify Esrati’s petitions after concluding he had 489 valid signatures when he needed 500. The deadline to submit petitions was March 8.

Today, Esrati presented the board with 16 signed and notarized affidavits from voters who signed his petition but the board ruled the signatures were invalid.

Esrati said the petition forms and process are deeply flawed and designed to discourage and prevent people from running for office. The other commission candidates are incumbent Commissioners Matt Joseph and Chris Shaw and Shenise Turner-Sloss and Valerie Duncan.
