Dayton officer recovering at home after being struck at Springfield charity bike run

UPDATE @ 9:21 p.m. (July 17)

A Dayton police officer is recovering at home from injuries he received when a car crashed into the motorcycle he was driving during a charity motorcycle ride in Springfield on Saturday.

Officer Jeffrey Holmes was hit when Andrew Marshall, 90, of Springfield attempted to cross Columbus Avenue after stopping at its intersection with Wheel Street.

Marshall hit Holmes’ motorcycle and then crashed into a car stopped near the intersection.

Holmes was flown by a CareFlight medical helicopter from the scene. His injuries weren’t disclosed but he has since been released from Miami Valley Hospital and is recovering at home, according to a Dayton Police Department public information officer.

Katie Cornell, a neighbor living near where the crash happened, said she returned home to the dramatic scene.

“I came back to an officer laying in the middle of the road [sic] that he got hit by a car on his motorcycle,” Cornell said.

Springfield police said an investigation into the crash is ongoing and charges could be filed after police finish their work.

David Bush, general manager of Ride One Powersports in Springfield, said drivers need to be cautious of how much space they keep between motorcyclists.

“Let’s just say it’s a motorcycle, for instance, and you’re riding and maybe they are going a little slower than you would like,” Bush said. “You need to back off. You always want to use a car’s length, just like you would another car.”
