Dayton Tornadoes: Find out what’s needed when offering donations

Individuals have stepped up to donate physical items to the many victims of the Memorial Day tornado outbreak who remain displaced and in need of some type of aid.

Now, many organizations that have joined the effort are suggesting what items will be most useful as the recovery continues.

“The needs do change,” Harrison Twp. resident Justin Thomason told News Center 7’s Sean Cudahy on Wednesday night.

Mike Sherwood from Heidelberg distributing said he found people were no longer taking water and have begun  asking for ice.

Tornado victims are finding they are in need of diapers, baby formula and undergarments for elders, especially size small, Harrison Twp. resident Ebony Moore said.

“If you wouldn’t use it or you wouldn’t wear it or eat it don’t donate it,” she said.

Officials with the Dayton Area Red Cross said financial donations are the best way to help.

“Donations of items takes time to sort, clean, transport and distribute,” Red Cross officials said. “With financial donations we can purchase exactly what is needed and expedite assistance directly to the people who need it most.”

The Better Business Bureau advises that you use caution when deciding where you’re going to give. Established organizations experienced at running relief campaigns are your best bet, BBB officials said.
