Centerville fatal fire started in a bedroom, officials say

A fire that claimed the life of a 68-year-old Centerville woman Tuesday is still under investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal, but the investigation has revealed where in the house the fire started.

According to Kelly Stincer of the Fire & Explosion Investigation division of the state fire marshal’s office, the fire that claimed the life of Mary Atkinson started in one of the bedrooms of the home. Stincer did not say which room in the house the fire originated.

The fire marshal’s office, in a preliminary determination, said that arson is not the suspected cause of the fire.

Washington Twp. fire crews were dispatched to a house fire call on Coachman Drive in Centerville around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The home’s occupants, a husband and wife, awoke to the smell of smoke and searched the house for the smell. The couple went in different directions, searching for the source of the smell.

The husband grabbed a fire extinguisher to battle the flames, but couldn’t find the source, said Gaul.

The husband then went outside believing his wife had already escaped, and when he realized she wasn’t, he tried to go back inside.

Crews found Atkinson still in the house when they entered through the back side of the house.
