“It’s tied somewhat into other issues with heroin and also somewhat with issues of theft experienced here in the city,” Lang said. “(Heroin) crosses all socio-economic lines, it crosses age lines. It’s definitely something we’ve seen quite a bit of over the past year.”
Police arrested 10 people for allegedly soliciting prostitutes: Kentah Byrd, 37; Sachin Kadam, 38; Jerry Gosser, 58; Rupal Patel, 39; Darin Brehm, 49; Jerome Gilliam, 33; Ronald Coffey, 47; Stephen Crawford, 35; Francesco Fata, 48; and Danny Brown, 25. Five women were arrested for prostitution: Candace Lay, 34; Ariell Brock, 31; Nicole Darcy, 44; Samantha Byrd, 28; and Amber Hendricks, 29.
While the majority of those arrested came from the Dayton area, some traveled across state lines, allegedly responding to Internet ads for sex. Hendricks is from Kentucky, Fata is from Michigan, Coffey is from Indiana and Kentah Byrd is from Tennessee, according to police.
Alice Callier, who’s lived in Englewood for 40 years, said she never expected to find prostitution “in my bedroom community.” However, she said she’s glad to hear police are cracking down.
“I know my police force and they are the ones who are totally responsible for ridding the neighborhood of this kind of crime,” she said.
Lang said the department is planning several more stings in conjunction with R-STORM, and he hopes it sends a message that this type of crime won’t be tolerated in Englewood.
“We want to keep the word out, (if) people think they’re going to come to Englewood for (sex), this will be in the back of their mind, that we’re going to enforce this and maybe they won’t come here,” he said.
R-STORM is also assisting departments with similar stings in Miamisburg, Riverside and Huber Heights.
