2 Dayton men cited for carrying firearms at WV Capitol grounds

Two Dayton men were cited Monday for carrying firearms at the West Virginia State Capitol, according to law enforcement in the state.

Tyler Grant and Kyle Hipol, both of Dayton, were cited for willful disruption of governmental processes. The alleged offenses occurred at the State Capitol Complex, according to West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety Spokesman Lawrence Messina.

He said six people were stopped on the Capitol grounds while carrying AR-15s and semi-automatic pistols Monday. A third man, Tyler Thornton, from Franklin Furnace, Ohio, was also cited.

It is illegal for any person to bring to the state capital complex any weapon, according to a statute provided by Messina.

“Any person who violates this subsection is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be fined not less than $100 or confined in jail not more than six months, or both,” the statute says.
