4 Dayton shootings in 24 hours leave 2 people dead, 2 hurt

Dayton police are investigating two fatal shootings and two non-fatal shootings, all of which took place within a 24-hour span inside city limits.

Two of the shootings took place at Eagle Ridge Apartments in north Dayton, and one of those two incidents was fatal.

The second deadly shooting happened on Highland Avenue shortly before noon Tuesday.

Authorities were first called to the Eagle Ridge complex at around 5 p.m. Monday.

Chendo L. Buford, 26, of Dayton, died on the scene, according to Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger. The cause and manner of his death have not been determined at this time.

Details about what took place leading up to the shooting haven’t been released by authorities, however, initial reports said the gunshot victim was inside a blue vehicle.

Dayton police are continuing to investigate Buford’s death. A memorial with balloons, candles and flowers was placed outside the apartment complex Tuesday morning.

Dayton police were called back to the apartment complex early Tuesday morning for another shooting. This time, court records say that a man was shot in the head.

James Smith, 24, of Dayton, was charged in Dayton Municipal Court with two counts of felonious assaults and one count of having a weapon while under disability. An arrest warrant was issued in the case, but Smith was not listed in jail Tuesday afternoon.

An affidavit filed in the case says officers saw a crime scene inside one of the apartments in the home.

“When we arrived, we were informed that (a man) had been shot in the head by Mr. James Smith II,” the affidavit says. “We entered the apartment at 5108 Northcrest and immediately observed blood on the ground and on the kitchenette area.”

Investigators interviewed a witness who told them that she and her boyfriend were arguing about going inside after “celebrating the life of ‘BJ,’ who was killed several hours before the incident.”

“She stated that when she and (the man) went inside the residence, her brother, James followed. When Mr. Smith was inside, he fired a round at (the victim) but the gun jammed,” the affidavit says. “Mr. Smith cleared the firearm, throwing a live round onto the ground, and then shot at (the victim) in the head.”

Dayton Police: Officer found victim on Highland Avenue just as shooting was reported

The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police. Police said in the affidavit they were able to talk with him at the hospital and he confirmed the details.

Despite the close proximity and time of the shootings, Dayton police Lt. Jason Hall said the investigations do not indicate that the shootings were related.

Also on Tuesday, police were called to another fatal shooting. A police officer who was driving in the 1200 block of Highland Avenue saw a person on the ground. A caller reported a shooting in the area not long after the victim was discovered, said Dayton Police Sgt. Eric Brown.

The victim, identified Tuesday evening as 25-year-old Juan Moore of Dayton, was pronounced dead on the scene. His cause of death was not immediately available.

Joe Mercer, who has lived in the area for about a year, said he was watching TV when he saw the lights from an ambulance outside.

“I peeked out and, lo and behold, I just look out and there’s a body on the sidewalk,” he said.

He said the neighborhood is typically quiet, but that in the last month there’s been accidents, cars broken into and a person who was jumped.

Also, Dayton police responded to a shooting on Germantown Street on Monday afternoon. In that incident, a man was shot in the leg.
