A former Troy police officer accused of stealing money intended for the DARE program pleaded not guilty Monday in Miami County Common Pleas Court.
Kirt E. Wright, 41, of Troy, is charged with one count of felony theft in office. He resigned from the police department July 23. Wright was released on his own recognizance.
County Prosecutor Tony Kendell said Wright is accused of misusing a credit card issued only for the purposes of the schools DARE program. The card was funded with money donated to the program. The charge alleges the theft of occurred between January 2008 and May 30. Kendell said more than $13,000 allegedly was stolen.
Wright worked for the county sheriff's department from September 1991 through August 1999, when he joined the Troy Police Department. He was assigned a School Resource Officer in 2008.
