Local police-involved shootings: What you need to know

Twice in less than a week, local police officers have been involved in shootings that left one man dead and a teenager injured.

On Thursday, a Centerville officer shot a 15-year-old boy after the teen reportedly pointed what turned out to be a “replica” handgun at officers and refused repeated warnings to drop the weapon.

On Sunday, an Englewood officer shot and killed 41-year-old Shelly Porter III during an altercation at an abandoned motel shortly after Porter allegedly fired shots into a room at the nearby Motel 6.

Here are five other police-involved shootings that took place in the past year and updates on where the cases stand:

1. Ashley Sides killed in Brookville shootout, Oct. 31, 2016

Sides crashed her car after a brief pursuit by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Police say a shootout followed, in which another suspect, Conrad Davis, fired a .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun at officers, hitting Officer Henry Edds. Two officers then fired their weapons with Officer Frank Graci firing several shots that killed Sides. She was holding a cell phone and a cloth pouch, but no weapon, according to court documents.

Davis pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault of a peace officer and felonious assault of a peace officer with a deadly weapon. Both officers were cleared of criminal conduct by a Montgomery County grand jury.

2. David Miller shot by Dayton police, Sept. 12, 2016.

Police said Miller had broken up with his girlfriend and was suicidal when he held a gun under his chin after crashing his motorcycle on East Third Street. Miller started moving toward citizens with the gun kept under his chin before officers shot and wounded him. The officers involved were cleared of wrongdoing by a grand jury.

3. Joshua Kiser goes on the run after being shot by Huber police, June 27, 2016.

Kiser was stopped by Huber police for an outstanding warrant but attempted to flee and drove the vehicle toward Officer Aaron Harlow, causing the officer to fire his weapon. Police recovered the Nissan later that evening, at the Travelodge, 7575 Poe Ave. Inside they found bullets and blood and believed Kiser was wounded and on the run with his girlfriend. The couple was located and taken into custody July 7 in Fairborn and Kiser was taken for medical attention.

Kiser was indicted on two counts of receiving stolen property and failure to comply with police order. His girlfriend Paige Taylor was indicted for receiving stolen property; tampering with evidence and obstructing justice. Another woman was charged and convicted of receiving stolen property.

4. Kisha Arrone killed by Dayton Police during domestic disturbance, April 17, 2016

Arrone was involved in a disturbance with her domestic partner where she held a gun to the woman’s head, threatened to kill her and fired several shots. Arrone was killed after she initially attempted to drive away, but then exited the truck and fired a gun into the air while walking toward her domestic partner and others.

A grand jury cleared the officers involved of any wrongdoing.

5. Rouven Loch killed in standoff with Fairborn police, Feb. 22, 2016

Loch was suspected in a string of store robberies over several days in Dayton and in Fairborn. When officers from the Regional Emergency Response Team went to his home, a standoff ensued and ended when Loch exited the home and pointed a realistic-looking pellet gun at officers. He was shot in the torso.

Following a BCI investigation, a grand jury declined to indict the officer who shot Loch.
