Many reports of stolen guns are the result of weapons taken from cars, Kelly said. Often vehicles are unlocked or gun owners left their weapons under seats.
Many owners report their guns stolen, he said, but don’t keep records of serial numbers or appropriate makes or models of guns so that law enforcement can track them once they are recovered.
The sheriff will be talking to people at the Clark County Fair this week to begin his push for gun owners to know what records they should keep in case their guns are stolen.
