Thief who targets Broadway Cafe in Trotwood comes away empty-handed

The Broadway Cafe owner says burglars keep coming back, even though they get nothing.

The Trotwood business was hit again early Monday, and now the owner hopes someone might recognize the man in the surveillance video.

The footage shows the would-be thief turn his back to the restaurant’s front door and use his heel to kick a hole in the glass. The man then crawls in through the opening he just made.

Once inside, the man races behind the counter. But the cash register drawer already is open, and empty. The criminal checks it, but eventually runs back out.

The owner of Broadway Cafe, 203 N. Broadway St., said he’s been through this too many times before, about six or seven times in the last decade. He takes all the money out of the restaurant every night so there’s nothing for thieves to steal.

Monday afternoon, the cafe was busy. But the front still showed damage from that morning.

The owner said even though the burglars leave empty-handed, it still costs hundreds of dollars to repair the damage done every time.

That’s why when a woman at the shop next door heard about this, she walked over and offered the owner $100 cash.

“That’s horrible. People don’t understand if you own a business, you’re not rich,” said Joyce McMillen of Dayton.

In the end, the owner wouldn’t take the money. In the meantime, he’s installing an alarm system.
