Vandals target old high school

MONROE — Police responded to a vandalism and criminal damaging complaint at Old Lemon Monroe High School on Elm Street on Monday, July 19.

Graffiti that included obscene pictures was found painted on the exterior brick and windows of the school located at 101 Elm Street at about 9:27 a.m., said Monroe police Chief Greg Homer.

There are no leads or suspects and the incident remains under investigation, he said.

Last month, the department arrested two groups of individuals for vandalizing the vacant school building, which Lt. Brian Curlis said is a target for vandals.

“It’s just something we’re going to have to keep an eye on,” he said.

Curlis said he is not sure if the recent incident is connected to the June 30 vandalism at Community Park at 500 S. Main St. in Monroe.

Profanity, obscene images and a racial slur was painted on rest rooms, benches, trash cans, signs, the pavilion and at least one tree, causing an estimated $2,261 in damage, according to the city.
