Victim of Bancroft Street shooting ID’d

Police have identified a man shot and killed Saturday.

Charles Black, 26, died after the incident in the 1600 block of Bancroft Street. Police Lt. Donald Burden said the shooting happened a little after 6 p.m. when Black was sitting in a car and someone approached from behind and fired multiple shots into the vehicle.

“We don’t have a whole lot of history with the gentleman as far as a drug history or anything like that so it doesn’t follow the pattern of the several other shootings we’ve had,” he said.

As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests had been made. Police said the shooter has been described only as a heavyset black male and over 6 feet tall. A handgun was used in the shooting, according to police.

Before Saturday, the latest in the string of recent homicides was on Friday afternoon, when 28-year-old Willy Boddie Jr. was shot to death in the parking lot of the H&H Service Center on West Riverview Avenue.

“Some may or may not be related,” Burden said on Saturday night. “We don’t know if it’s got something more to do with (retaliation).”
