Judge Jeannine Pratt set the bail in county Common Pleas Court.
A written plea of not guilty by reason of insanity was filed Monday and the plea also entered verbally for Weaver by public defender Steve Layman. The arraignment was done via video from the county jail.
Weaver is accused of hitting a girl with a board while attempting to correct her, said Paul Watkins, first assistant county prosecuting attorney. The girl was struck on her body as well as in the head, he said. The offense took place June 2 in West Milton with the girl suffering “serious physical harm,” the indictment said.
Watkins asked Pratt to set a “significant” bond for Weaver who initially was charged with felonious assault and held on $250,000 bail. Watkins asked for higher bail because the grand jury returned the second charge of child endangering. He also asked for a no contact order with the girl should Weaver post bail.
Pratt set the bail as $300,000 cash or surety. Weaver was ordered to have no contact with the girl and to undergo drug screenings, if he posts bail.
A pretrial hearing date was not set by Pratt. The case was assigned to Judge Stacy Wall.
