Diabetes health center now seeing patients in downtown Hamilton

Fort Hamilton Hospital and Joslin Diabetes Center have opened a new health center for diabetes and endocrinology downtown.

The center started seeing patients on High Street in November, and a Kettering Health Network doctor plans to join the location and open a primary care office in the same building in January, according to the health center staff.

Fort Hamilton is part of the nonprofit Kettering Health network.

The new center, located in Suite B at 150 High Street in the former Elder-Beerman building, offers outpatient educational, nutrition therapy and evaluation services for people with diabetes. But it’s not just for diabetic patients. Those seeking nutrition services for managing weight and hypertension would benefit as well, staff members said.

Services could also help patients suffering from hyperthyroid, hypothyroid and other endocrinology disorders.

No other services in Hamilton provide dedicated diabetes care, said Dr. Baker Machhadieh, an endocrinologist who sees patients at the downtown office.

“In Ohio, there’s some kind of epidemic in diabetes,” Machhadieh said.

“Those patients end up in the hospital… and when they are outside of the hospital, there’s no continuation of care,” he said. “Hopefully, our job is to provide the care for those patients, make them healthier… and maybe prevent a lot of other diseases related to diabetes.”

A doctor’s referral is needed to make an appointment at the health center or attend a class, said Dawn Lyon, registered nurse and diabetes educator.

The goal of educational services is to teach people to self-manage their disease with the help of the provider and reduce complications, Lyon said.

Dietitian and Diabetes Educator Jennifer Pate added that not only can services benefit people with and without diabetes, the services can also benefit people whether they’re newly diagnosed with the disease or have had diabetes long-term.

“I think people need to know no matter where there are in diabetes management, we accept them,” Lyon said. “I think sometimes people are afraid to access these services.”

Fort Hamilton and Kettering Health are the latest tenants to open in the former Elder-Beerman building, which is owned by the nonprofit CORE Fund. Other tenants to open there this year include the call center StarTek Inc., Jackson's Market and Deli, and Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities art initiative InsideOut Studio.
