A car was hit by a train Saturday morning in Butler County.

Police were called to the crash scene just after 9 a.m. at Pierson Road railroad crossing near Riverside Drive in Trenton.

A male driver, with two children in the car, attempted unsuccessfully to “beat the train,” according to Trenton Police Officer Kyle Root.

“The male was not hurt, and the children did not appear injured, however, they were transported to an area hospital for evaluation,” Root said Saturday.

Root confirmed the railroad crossing arms had descended.

“There was visible damage to the railroad crossing,” he said.

The train itself had sustained mild damage but was able to continue on its route soon after the crash.

Root could not confirm whether any charges will be filed against the driver, as the incident remains under investigation.
